BMC election results 2017 LIVE: Shiv Sena doubles lead over
BJP Welcome to the live coverage of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election results which will decide the fate of the two front-runners, BJP and Shiv Sena. Exit polls have estimated that the two parties are competiting neck to neck, with Sena hoping to retain power. From ward no. 204, Shiv Sena's Anil Kokil wins by 6110 votes. 1 Counting of votes is going on for 227 wards. Shiv Sena members have started celebrating party's win as early numbers predict that the party will come in power. It seems that BJP is catching up. Latest leads say that BJP now is leading in 50 seats. Sena maintains hold on Mumbai, BJP has edge in Nashik Former Mayor Shraddha Jadhav has won from ward no. 202 consecutively for the sixth time. Till now the tally looks like- Shiv Sena- 83, BJP- 48, Congress- 17, NCP- 7, MNS- 9 Raj Thackeray led MNS (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) is leading only in nine seats. According to the latest leads, Congress is leading in 16 seats and NCP is leads in only 7. Goregaon, which was earlier dominated by the Marathi population, now has North Indians residing there in big numbers. This changed demographic has made competition for the political parties more tough. It seems the Marathi Manoos came to the rescue of Shiv Sena as the latest lead shows that Shiv Sena is leading in 64 seats and BJP in 34 seats. Shiv Sena leader Anil Desai is confident of the party's win and in an interview said, "Sena confident alliance with BJP won't be needed." In the 2012 BMC polls, Shiv Sena had won with 21.84 percent of total votes polled. and the BJP got only 8.64 percent. We get you interesting trivia about the BMC polls. The last time Mumbai saw high voting percentage was in 1992 when 49 per cent voters had exercised their franchise. Congress party has taken the third position with nine seats. From the first leads we get to know that BJP and Shiv Sena are leading in one seat each. This time Sena is fighting without the support of its former ally BJP (Bhartiya Janata Party). Counting has begun for 227 wards. A total of 2,275 candidates are in the fray for the BMC polls. What is interesting to watch out for in this election is that BJP and Shiv Sena have decided to go against an alliance. Competition is tough as BMC is Sena's stronghold. The process of counting was started by putting together EVMs and sorting them out- ward wise. After this a representative of each political party is made present before the elction officials to ensure that EVMs are sealed securely.There was a high voter turnout this year as compared to 2012. However, the registered voter this year came down from 1.02 crore to 91.8 lakh.
